Response to Intervention

The fundamentals of RTI echo through Gradestreet.

There are a wealth of resources explaining the benefits of Response to Intervention, or RTI. In many ways, Gradestreet acts as an MTSS, or multi-tiered system of support. As the app evolves, it will continually improve an organization’s ability to implement RTI.

The Basics

The diagram below illustrates our vision of RTI. As opposed to the typical Screening and Progress Monitoring components, we’ve lumped them together and called them what they are: Assessment.

Figure 1. RTI reimagined.

So, in effect, the RTI process can be boiled down to this:

  1. Give assessments
  2. Identify students with needs
  3. Provide interventions

And repeat.

Each iteration of the above process is called a tier in the language of RTI. You can learn more about this at the RTI Action Network’s website. Typically, there are three tiers. While it is highly recommended to adhere to this norm, Gradestreet leaves it up to each organization to decide the number of tiers. One thing is absolute, though. As the tier number rises, the number of students receiving intervention should decline.

The Details

We won’t go into all of the intricacies of the RTI methodology in one article. Here is a list of resources we track as inspiration for future research and development.
